Dental Doggie Dilemma

Indulge me for a moment if you will......

I took my 10 year old Dalmation, Forrest to the vet this morning for dental cleaning. I was very torn about this. He has had his teeth cleaned in the past, and I did not think much of it, but as Forrest has reached his golden years I have been very reticent to put him under anesthesia. I wish they could clean his teeth without putting him under. I have spoken to my friends Barbara and Melanie about this very thing, and both of them are not fans of putting older dogs under anesthesia unless medically necessary. I totally agree with Barbara and Melanie and had pretty much made my mind up that I would not put Forrest under anesthesia for teeth cleaning, BUT the vet told me that Forrest's teeth are bad and they are painful to him and they NEED to be cleaned or he could get a bad infection So trusting the vet, but very nervous about the anesthesia, I took him this morning to get his teeth cleaned.

There is a Walgreens right next to the vet's office, so after I dropped Forrest off, I went to Walgreens to drown my nervousness in lavendar Isadora eyeshadow.
As I was paying for my lavendar eyeshadow and other beauty booty, I noticed some Hershey Kiss Cookies by the cash register. I had been chatting with the cashier, Doris, so I asked Doris if the cookies were any good, and she stuck 2 boxes in my bag FOR FREE and told me they were very good and I should try them. Doris was so nice and funny and just what I needed this morning in the midst of my fear about Forrest. Purple eyeshadow and free cookies --that makes everything better.

Please send Forrest some good thoughts today. I cannot go pick him up till after 5:30pm, so I am sure I will worry about him all day long.

Thanks for the good thoughts, and Thank You Doris for the cookies!

I will definitely send Forrest the positive vibe. My kitty Diva is also getting up in years, and they have to sedate her to clean her teeth, too, and it makes me worry, so I empathize. Enjoy your cookies and try not to worry! :)

OH, Forrest! You are doing the right thing, PJ...esp. if his teeth are indeed painful for him. Don't worry.

Cleanings don't take tooo long to do, as opposed to oral surgery. It's not out of line to give the vet's office a call; Forrest might be finished already, and you can spend your afternoon relaxed in the knowledge that he's perfectly fine :-)

Hello Yez,

Thanks for the kind words. The Vet called me a little while ago and Forrest is done and doing well. Still groggy, but doing well.

Thank you.

I had to comment even though I know Forrest is out of harms way, and safe in your arms by now. I read this post about 10am, and my thoughts and prayers have been with you both. Forrest may be in his golden years, but will always be your baby. Give him hugs for me. People give what they receive. The generosity of your chat with Doris this morning was what she needed just as much as yours hers. How were those cookies? Sounds good with a cold glass of milk!!!! Many hugs to you, S~love

Melanie,

I have full confidence you will be able to pitch some woo at Forrest and he will be putty in your hands.
Thanks for the kind words about the banner. I am so pleased about it. The artist who did it is very talented.

Mary-
Oh that is so sweet of you to check on Forrest. He is home and whining because he is still a little loopy, but his teeth are supermodel white and he is doing good. Thanks for checking on him.
He is such a sweet boy!

Aw, poor Forrest. The teeth thing is awful for us, and even worse for our hirsute little buddies. My dachsie is going to turn 10 this year, and I am so grateful to my vet that they can put him under and get his teeth fixed much more safely than in years past. Really, it will be okay. Though, and I don't know if this only a little dog thing or not, but watch out for the diarrhea afterwards. My poor little guy was loopy afterwards, but his mood lifted greatly because he was no longer in such pain. (He had to have some removed, sadly.) I think that you made the right call, and Forrest will be so much better off having done it. You just have to love him a little extra afterwards, as I noticed with Fred that he was super loopy for a couple days after his vet trip. Give the guy an extra hug and ear scratch from me, okay? Poor Forrest!

GAH! And in my doggie sympathy (I am a doggie sucker to an extreme) I totally forgot to rave about your new header! It is marvelous, and so so cool. Very nice!

Good luck and best wishes for your doggie. I recently had to put my cat (Michael Jordan, 15 yrs old) under to have his teeth cleaned. That was a rough day. He is fine (yay!) but it was a little alarming for him to have to be put under just to clean his blooming teeth. I mean, it's the 21st century, shouldn't certain things be easier at this point in history?
All the best,

What a handsome pooch! I love dalmatians. I'm sure everything will be fine - they don't like having their teggies brushed but oral hygiene is so important! Also loving your new template - very cute.

So glad Forrest made it okay. I hear you on the anesthesia trepidation, especially with an older dog. But now his teeth are clean and you get to renew your commitment to brush them EVERY DAY COME HELL OR HIGH WATER. Don't you just love brushing a dog's teeth? I use a baby toothbrush; they're a lot easier than those finger thingies.

I LOVE your new layout, by the way. However did you find that masthead? It's perfect!

*Katie Lady-

Thanks for the well wishes for Forrest. Thanks also for the warning about the bowel issues anesthesia can bring our 4 legged kids. Forrest was loopy for a while, but seems to be back to his normal self this morning.
Thanks also for the kind words about the art banner.

Hello and Thanks for visiting my humble blog. I am glad the teeth cleaning is over and everything is fine. Big hugs to Michael Jordan!
I love your blog by the way.
I left some comments.

Hello Whitepoppy,

Thanks for saying hello and thanks for calling Forrest handsome--he is rather dashing, no? HA.
Thank you also for the nice words about the new template!
Do not be a stranger.

Hello K,

I hope you had a lovely Mother's Day. I wish I could clean Forrest's teeth every day, but the boy weighs 80lbs and he is very strong, and he wants NO PART of having his teeth brushed.
Thanks for the kind words on the masthead. I found an awesome artist who did it. It is original artwork designed by her...along with my ideas.

xo to you and Fi and Cowgirl!

How's Forritzimo??? Am I still his Auntie Em? Please tell me I'm his emergency contact. (Being EC for 12 cats and 2 dogs is not enough!)

Did you get any love from Blackie this morning? I hope so.

P.S. I found my new favorite vet in the city - if you're ever doubting yours, Dr. Rovner to the rescue.

Who would have thought that you would have gotten the most comments about your dog? Cute guy, though. Imagine if you had children and you had to take them to the doctor?

I'll write a blog about my dog Lucky. Watch for it...he has nightmares and barks in his sleep. It should be a big hit!

Hi Green Eyes,

Forrest is good. He has been his usual self. Sweet and needy--HA!
Thanks for checking in on him!

Em-
Forritizimo is good. He was loopy at first, but now he is awesome!
Thanks Auntie Em! I will check out Dr. Rovner--Thanks for the rec.

Lost Okie-
My dog rocks...and is uber handsome that is why all the comments! It would be different taking a child to the doctor. My child would not be 77 years old. That is Forrest's age in dog years. I would be a nervous wreck taking a child to the hospital though.

I will for sure check out your blog about Lucky!!

Have a great day everyone!
