Nicki 11.30.1996--12.08.2006

My sweet Westie passed away a week ago today. Nicki was a sweet dog and a constant companion. It was unexpected, and I was not prepared, but I guess you never are. He had been misdiagnosed for over a week, and when we finally got a diagnosis...it was not good. If your dog has excessive sneezing-please take them to a specialist and do not believe it is allergies or something else respiratory . Nicki had been in pain, and it is torture to see a loved one in pain. He was my sidekick for 10 years and I feel lucky. Everyone who knew Nicki loved him. He was my buddy, tomato eater, official Garage Sale Greeter, and all around jovial guy.

Nicki loved squirrels, Shelties, his brother Forrest, cucumbers, french fries, walks, rides in the car, The Westminister Kennel Club dog show on TV, and kisses.
Oh and he loved his chair, and would sit in it for hours. Sometimes he would sit up in his chair and bark a few times just to let us know he was king of the castle, then he would go back to sleep.

I am touched by all the kindness people have shown. Some people have said things like "Oh well he was just a pet". You cannot quantify love, and I loved that little dog. He was not just a pet, he was my family.

It would be so easy to fall into a fog of sadness, but I know life has to move on. My friend Em told me it was about time for a tribute to Nicki.... so here it is.

Rest in Peace my sweet little man. I love you.

I am so sad to hear about Nicki, I completely understand how much you love your dog and how hard it is to go through that loss. I still get tears when I think about the dog I lost and I can't even imagine being without my Lily now. I am thinking about you and hoping you feel comfort and the support of loved ones during this difficult time.

My Aunt had two Westies (Mother & daughter) that died within hours of each other. Heidi was 12 Mindy was 8 or so. The two dogs were so close that when Mindy had to go have surgery for cancer (before she died) Heidi ran through the house for hours howling. The vet said Heidi had a heart attack. My Aunt was hysterical. Her husband was away on business, so my Uncle had to go over and remove the dogs. SO SAD!! Anyone who says it's just a pet has never had one. They are just like your family.

I'm so sorry, doll. What a sweet guy, and such a love to you. I'm sad for your loss and sad for people who have apparently been deprived of the incredible love a special pet brings to a family.

Thanks for sharing your little guy with us here.

That was very sweet Jen. Nicki had a great personality. I remember the first time we met and he had on that leather jacket. I have a pic of him with it on. He is playing with Thumper. I think Nicki would want you to shower the love for him to his brother Forrest now. Nicki is and will be greatly missed. Many Hugs and kisses

Oh hon. :'-(

My condolences. I know words will never do, but for what it's worth, I do know how painful it is to lose a loved one (both animal and human, and I've got to tell you, it's a dead heat), so I know the pain you're feeling right now. {{{{{{J}}}}}}

Please look at it as a blessing that fate allowed the two of you to travel through life together, if only for the (pathetically short) time of Nicki's life. You were lucky to have each other.

xoxo

I just wanted to offer my condolences and sympathy on the loss of your beloved Nicki. I can only imagine your heartbreak and the void left by his passing. I don't care what anyone says, it's as tramatic as losing a family member or close friend. He was truly fortunate to have as loving and caring a mommy as you, and you have the memories of all the joy he brought you. At least he is at rest now and not suffering anymore {{{{Peej}}}}

Waterworks! Fabulous tribute!

Nicki was a wonderful pup, Jen. The one thing you can always hold dear is the fact that you never gave Nicki anything less than your whole heart. He's chasing butterflies with Gilligan and McDougal and every dog I've ever loved and lost.

Say hello to that handsome man, Forest! And if you need some Tootie therapy, you just let me know. :)

((((((Jen))))))

What a cutie pup, what a friend. I'm so sorry you lost him, and so suddenly. I had no idea.

I don't believe in heaven for people, but weirdly, I believe in heaven for dogs, because I think they deserve it. Maybe if dogs love us enough we get to go there too.

I'm so sorry for you loss, I can't even begin to think of life without our dog Lucky, they really become part of the family and people who don't have dogs just don't realize this.
I hope you find comfort in all your good memories.

Tessa, Tania, and Tracy--

Thank you ladies so much for your words. I miss my little guy.

Tania- I guess I agree with you. I think of animals in heaven, and it is a big field where they can run and play. I do not picture heaven for humans.
I hope Nicki is in heaven getting lots of treats and chasing lots of squirrels.

It has been a while since I have visited the blog! For that, I am sorry.

This post makes me really sad. My family recently had to put down our first son at the beginning of November.

I should clarify. We considered our dog Lucky our first son.

He was eleven years old and diagnosed with lung cancer (and he never smoked?)

I have realized from his death how much I love my children. After having to witness the approved death of our boy Lucky I don't know if I could make it through the death of a child.

I hope that your grief was less than my wife and mine.

Call sometime!!!
